Monarch Butterfly Caterpillar Food + SEO?
By Susan Flansburg
SEO isn’t something you do, but the result of doing other things well. - Steven Shattuck, Chief Engagement Officer at Bloomerang
If you maintain a website, you know you need to keep it optimized for Google. Search Engine Optimization is not optional!
Search terms are at the heart of it.
If you sell milkweed seeds, for example, your website should be full of those words, along with associated language (“monarch butterfly caterpillar food” comes to mind)!
But search terms aren’t the only factor to successful SEO. Other ranking factors include things like how fast your pages load, and whether visitors browse several pages at a time.
These are some of the seeds of a successful website.
To evaluate your own site, think like your customer or donor. Ask yourself what s/he wants to find on your site. What questions need to be answered? What products need to be shared?
Now try to find the desired material yourself. Is it easy or a little complicated? Do your photos take forever to load? Does your site naturally lead visitors to other pages of desired content?
Bloomerang’s Steven Shattuck shares some more tips in a very helpful blog. He wrote it for nonprofits, but it’s useful for any website.
As he says about employing SEO, “Like planting a tree (or milkweed!), the best time to get started was yesterday. The next best time is today.”
